Poster Contest Rules
This poster contest does in fact rule, but that’s a story for another time. Here is the information needed to participate, how to participate in such a way as to possibly win, and other more or less pertinent guidelines.
Invitation
Astrosphere New Media Association (parent nonprofit of Astronomy Cast, 365 Days of Astronomy, and the AstroGear.org online store) invites one and all to submit original works of Art that facilitate the Education of Science. Help us share Astronomy with the world. You know you want to.
Theme
Simple yet complex here. The winning poster will be a Moon Phases Calendar for 2012. Say you want a moonless night for stargazing plans, or you may need to know when the full moon is in May…… a quick glance at your poster and bazinga, you just know.
Eligibility
One and all. Of course you need the tools to submit a print-ready file, so one and all with the tools to submit a print-ready file. Scientist, Students, Stargazers, Singers, Shoemakers,
Secretaries, Samba Instructors, even….. yes……. even Semi-Pro or Professional Graphic Designers, anyone…. anybody …. even committees and/or teams may enter (good luck with those last two). You do really need to be 18 or over to win. It’s a legal thing they tell me.
Submitting Files
One of the tools you need is a Flickr account. That’s going to limit the number of entries you can toss our way, and that’s a good thing. Judges like lots of entrants with a few entries, not a few entrants with lots of entries. Yes, that’s another thing they tell me.
The Flickr group where you can place your entries is linked here.
Criteria, Size & Layout
To be considered for judging all entries will need to contain the Astrosphere New Media Association logo sized 1/2 inch in height or larger. To be considered for judging all entries will also need to indicate in some way that the year is 2012. Should the winning entry be printed, and we reserve the option of not printing, it will be a 18″x24″ poster and possibly a 4.5″x6″ postcard. Your file(s) should be 18″x24″ or 24″x18″ of around 200dpi.
Judging Criteria & Procedure
The Public at Large will be invited to visit the Flickr Group and vote for their favorites via a web portal TBA. From a ‘shortlist’ of the most popular entries a panel of celebrity judges
shall choose the winning entry based on the following criteria:
1. Clear message conveyed by the artwork and text;
2. The poster theme listed above is addressed;
3. Creativity, artistic quality, and originality;
4. Visual clarity.
Awards
Possibly nothing here, but likely Astrosphere will offer a contract to the winning artist where they will receive a 12% royalty on all sales of the printed poster (from our printing run)made though or by Astrogear.org or by principles or employees of Astrosphere New Media Association. If we give them away, the artist gets zilch.
The artist gets zero for any post-card versions we give away or mail out as promotional materials. Keep in mind we are a real-deal nonprofit organization. Our mission is sharing. The winning artist will be sharing as well, sharing Astronomy with the world. But wait, there’s more! Top three vote getters from the public voting phase get their choice of Astrogear.org Tee-shirt, Pendant, and a framed certificate. How about that? I might have to enter myself………
